ABOUT US

Beth Cooper opened The Coopermarket  in a small storefront located in Bala Cynwyd , PA in March, 1995. This was the culmination of her dream to start a business where she could cook and sell the kind of full-flavored food she loves - food that is:

  • inspired by the seasons and what is available from local growers and producers
  • made from the freshest ingredients, using no preservatives
  • comforting and traditional, like the best home cooking
  • new and exciting, influenced by ingredients and dishes from around the world
Everyday, the cases at the The Coopermarket are filled with delicious food that is ready to go. We always have freshly prepared salads and sandwiches, a selection of our famous soups, and enticing entrées and side dishes.  And, our customers have a hard time passing up dessert - our cakes, fresh fruit pies and crisps, challah bread pudding and giant cookies will satisfy any sweet tooth. In addition, we offer bread delivered fresh daily from Le Bus and Metropolitan Bakeries, a carefully chosen selection of excellent cheeses, and the-best-anywhere La Colombe coffee. Whether you're looking for lunch for yourself, dinner for your family, or a buffet for a crowd, we've got what you need. Occasions we've catered include: Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, brits/baby namings/christenings, birthday parties, graduation parties, holiday parties, business meetings, and many more.

ABOUT BETH COOPER, chef/owner

From a family of good cooks, Beth has loved and appreciated food for as long as she can remember. Favorite memories include watching - and helping - her grandmother lovingly prepare food for family and friends. " "Mom mom" never used a recipe," recalls Beth. "I learned to cook by tasting, smelling, and touching the food."

Beth's first cooking job was at a summer camp while she was in high school. Later, at her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, she cooked at a private dining service and earned a reputation in her dorm for creating food (including blueberry pancakes!) for a crowd on the hotplate in her room. After graduation, Beth's first restaurant job was with Steven Poses at The Commissary. Then, in order to support her "ski habit," she moved on to cook at hotels and a dude ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Returning to Philadelphia, Beth cooked at another Poses restaurant, 16th Street Bar and Grill and at Roller's Restaurant in Chestnut Hill.

When Paul Roller opened Flying Fish, also in Chestnut Hill, he asked Beth to be his executive chef. Beth remained at the helm there for ten years. She left Flying Fish thinking she would like to open her own business. First, though, Beth wanted to travel and she did so extensively in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.  Much to her delight, she found memorable food everywhere and returned inspired to incorporate new ingredients and dishes into her cooking. Shortly after her return, a relative, herself skilled in fine food preparation, told Beth about a vacant former take-out shop in Bala Cynwyd, PA and the The Coopermarket was born in March, 1995.
